Creating a good first impression is especially important at three moments in your life: 1) when going on job interviews, 2) when meeting your future in-laws, and 3) when going on first dates.  And one of the most important parts of making a good first impression is your appearance.  It is the first thing that people notice when they see you, even before you open your mouth.  It is also the last thing they see when you walk away.  Leave a lasting impression by dressing appropriately for first dates.

When selecting what to wear on a first date there are a couple of things to consider:

Where will you be going?

It is important to dress appropriately for the activities taking place.  If you are going to a park or on a boat ride in the summer, you can wear sporty summer clothes, but your best sporty summer clothes.  Whereas, if you will be dining in a nice restaurant, be sure to call ahead for the dress code and dress for the occasion.  Some restaurants require that gentlemen wear coats and ties or that ladies not wear strapless attire.  Being turned away at the door is not a good way to begin the evening.

What activities will take place?

Always be prepared for the unexpected, especially is going on a date with a notoriously spontaneous person.  I understand that it is difficult to prepare for all possible scenarios, but you can be the judge.  Is there a possibility that any physical activity such as a long walk or tennis will take place?  If so, sporty summer attire would again be appropriate.

In order to make a good first impression be sure to wear something that is flattering.  Is there an outfit that always garners attention or compliments when you wear it?  That might be a suitable choice for a first date.  Remember that what you wear says a lot about who you are.  Try to convey the message you want for the first date.  If you are looking for only a casual encounter, dress accordingly, etc.

In addition to dressing your best, it is a good idea to be well groomed in general when meeting meeting up with your date for the first time.  Make sure your shoes are polished, your hair is in place, you nails are manicured, and your clothes are pressed.  All of these factors combined will help ensure that you make a good first impression with your date.
